Busy Busy Busy

Been busy as of late. An old honorable friend is in town and staying with me for a few weeks as he tries to make his re-entry back into this country. I am juggling with starting a new job that will be amazing, in every sense of the word and also dealing with those day to day japanese annoyances.

Most people that have lived here or are familiar with japan, know that the japanese like to take things to the next level. People that come here, and are open to that “next level” are few and far in between (IMHO.) Chris is one of those guys. So I dragged him to african dance and we enjoyed chucking spears around a bonfire. It was fun, especially since the teacher had just come back from africa. Afterwards we had dinner with the group and one of the new comers just happens to be a fishmonger for a really famous maguro shop in Tsukiji.

Mentioning that Chris had never been there, he invited to come. So Wednesday, I took Chris to Tsukiji fish market. We walked around gawking and imagining how tasty some of the fish have to be.

After a while we met up with our fishmonger friend, who just happened to have guided two young ladies from the dance class to tsukiji at the same time. From there, we had the best tour of Tsukiji a tourist could wish for.

They have vehicles there, that can best be described as gasoline powered dollies with flatbeds. Anyways, the 4 of us loaded up and he drove us around the market. We went to the area where the boats are docked and unloaded, the rooms where all the (expensive) fish are brought into for inspection and auction, and other areas that the normal tourists are not supposed to go.

Having been to Tsukiji multiple times, I have to say that this IS the best way to Tsukiji. Afterwards we walked around with the ladies and prepared to leave. Before we left, our chauffer/fishmonger presented us with an unexpected present. Wrapped in paper and ice was a 2 to 3 kilo steak of Maguro. Prime cut. Probably close to a 80$ cut from Tsukiji, or from the store, more like 300$.

Pretty damn awesome!

Having gotten about 1/2 way through it, I cannot imagine eating maguro for a long time!
