horse sushi

That is correct. Horse meat sushi.

I was at the local conveyor belt sushi place the other day and I was looking at the menu. For the description of one of the plates, “raw horsemeat.” This is of course close to the ’suquid.’

So I decide to ask a native friend what is horse meat, thinking surely it isn’t the fine four legged glue bottle fillers we have in the states. Damn was I wrong. Apparently horse is a delicacy here. Race horses are chopped up after they are no longer useful.

So naturally I had to try it… not too bad actually. A little fattier then a good piece of steak, not as fatty as pork, not as greasy as duck and almost as gamey as deer. Not that I have had any of these raw before. But it is definately worth trying and maybe having again. For the sushi aficionados out there, sasashi (ささし.) I am wondering if they have it in the states.

Let me know.
